  My husband and I have been hosting for about 9 years for various companies. ASSE is the first and last company that we hosted for. I would agree that this company needs to vet the students better. The first kid we hosted flat out told us that he didn't want to be there and that his father made him come. He was miserable the entire year and made the entire house on edge. This past year 2022-2023, we hosted two girls. What a nightmare. The one girl didn't want anything to do with us. We heard her on our security camera saying that we were old and fat and why would she want to do anything with us... The second girl, we loved. Had no problems with UNTIL I started noticing things missing. I check her room and sure enough found items of mine. Then I checked our security cameras and catch her red handed coming out of my room with things under her shirt and behind her back, on more then one occasion. I called my rep and had her removed from my home. Even with video this company did not support my husband and I. We had to sign contracts and so do they saying that we won't do this or that and them the same. I'm pretty sure that stealing would automatically warrant them sending her home. **, they moved her to my reps home. This company is only concerned about MONEY. Do not be fooled, this is a business. I still have not been contacted from anyone with ASSE except my local rep. ** apology. ** reimbursement. Also, if you host for them, you will have a year student for 11 months and get paid for only 10. A half year student for 6 months and paid for only 5. Total scam for the host families. Beware of ASSE

  We had hosted a student from another organization several years ago when their original host family decided not to keep at their home, but we found the student great and loved having them in our home. When I got an email from this organization, we were looking forward to hosting another student. While the student got along well with me and my child, they had some issues with my spouse. Granted, my spouse did get upset with the student and snapped at them, but nothing so serious that we thought couldn't be talked about and worked through. The student talked to our rep. about being really upset, who then spoke to us. We told the rep. we planned to have a sit down and talk with the student to try and work things out. The rep. said that we should wait till they could be part of the meeting. A week and a half later, after the student had time to sit and stew about the incident, and complain to their parents about it, we met. We talked first and said that now that we know what has upset the student, we'd like to have a "re-do" and start over. When the student spoke, they informed all of us that they had decided they wanted to go to another family, no surprise since they'd had over a week to think about without even saying anything to us. We were devastated. Then I was ****** because at our parent meeting before they came, they assured us that they would help us resolve conflicts before considering placing them in another home, which did NOT happen. I would NOT recommend this exchange company to anyone as they only care about the students' families who are paying thousands of dollars to come here.

  This has been an amazing experience. We have hosted for several years with ASSE. The students are very mature and responsible. We have made life long friendships and have stayed in contact with them all. The local representatives are very supportive as well as the regional director.

  I would run the opposite way from this company. I started hosting in 2016. My first year was horrible! My student had a 1.4 GPA, she was sneaking out of the house causing lots of drama. She strangled my 8 year old. They did nothing! I figured lets give it a second chance, not to judge hosting by one bad experience. We hosted the next year. We had an ok experience till the Regional Coordinator acted like she was in Highschool. She talked negatively about students, host families and the Area Representatives. I hosted a student this past year and he had type 1 diabetes. I asked several times about his primary insurance, which was never provided. The student didnt watch his diet. He said he was 17 and didnt need rules. He made our home very stressful and disruptive. He lied about everything, refused to speak English and made our other exchange student very uncomfortable. Our Area Representative just showed up to remove this boy to take him to the Regional Coordinators best friend. We were lied to about it. He left all his insulin at our house. He was rewarded for his bad behavior. The other student that we also were hosting from ASSE was asked only through the previous student, if he was ok. We never saw our Area Representative after the middle of December. The Area Representative never called us or our student. The Area Representative took other students on sightseeing trips and never took our student. Our student was extremely upset by this. This is also against the **************** rules. Our student left today, as much as we loved him, and will miss him, we are glad to be done with this organization. They are all about numbers because thats money! They could care less about the families and the students that they place. We are hosting with another organization next year which has awesome reviews. Exchange programs are good, but this one is horrible!!! Please beware!!
