According to BBB file information, this kind of promotion has appeared widely across the country, and frequently involves the use of a genuine company's name and address on the purported check. Conctact information, however, does not go back to the company whose identity has been stolen, but to phone and fax numbers that are frequently connected to sites outside the US.
The Better Business Bureau advises consumers to treat checks received in such circumstances with extreme caution. Depositing such items may result in financial losses if the recipient sends their own funds on to the unknown party, while the "deposit" proves to be fraudulent.
