I was overcharged on a monthly basis and charged an illegal amount of security deposits upon moving in which I approached the manager, John Palmer about and he denied , saying that my contract is a “standard PA contract”. In Philadelphia PA you’re only allowed to charge up to two months security deposit, but I have been charged THREE months on top of my security deposit. Totaling to about $14,000 for a two bedroom apt. My rent constantly was altered in the portal with no explanation. I was also discriminated against by a doorman who continuously made threatening comments towards my wife and I. He clearly had access to sensitive information on tenants through management and approached us about our finances , where we are from , etc. which he wouldn’t know unless he went through our lease agreement. He threw packages at me whenever I asked for them, and referred to me as “boy” on multiple occasions which I informed management about and they did nothing. I am an immigrant and he made several comments towards my race and nationality to my wife and myself upon entering and exiting the building . We brought this to management who stated that “No one else has a problem”. The building was hazardous and unfinished. we witnessed two huge roaches coming from two holes in the ceiling that was dripping a yellowish liquid and had concerns about bacteria. The building is in very poor condition and a huge health hazard. Now, after over a year of my departure from the Ledger I still haven’t received back my security deposit and the overcharges that they have illegally taken from me and promised on paper to return. I will at this point also have to sue them at municipal court as they have failed to respond to my attempts to get back my deposit within the 30 day limit for returning deposits. This is not a legit business and it should not be open to further fraud tenants in the manner they did to my wife and I.
