Dowell Towing and Recovery towed my and my grandson's motorcycles after a crash in ****** on Hwy 58. They charged $6400.00 for my bike, and a similar amount for my grandson's bike. The bikes were upright at the roadside and required no special handling. Dowell transported them on the same truck only seven miles to their storage garage in *************. My insurer tried to negotiate with them, considering the fee extremely outside of reasonable and customary charges. Dowell refused, according to my adjuster. An employee explained partially to me that they have unusually high overhead operating in a rural mountain highway environment. I have spoken with several people about this, as have my family, including LEO's and another professional tow operator. All have expressed disbelief at the amount charged. While I might understand some validity to the "unusual circumstances" rationale, it becomes an issue of scale and reasonableness. I respect their need to cover their overhead and make a reasonable profit. This seems way out of scale even in that context. Based on my experience and the uniform reaction to it, including by a large insurer, I urge people to engage an alternative tow company if they find themselves in need.
