I waited over a year to write this, thinking the anger wouldn't boil up inside me again, yet, as I start typing, the feelings return. We wanted to design our own headstone, to get just what we wanted & save our family from having to do it after we were gone. We chose Midwest because of good reviews on ************* were in our same town.We worked with ***** to design something that would fit with the 3 other stones in my family's grouping, even asking that our stone not be any taller than my parents'. She went to the cemetery and looked at the exiting stones. ***** was patient in the extensive design process, but somewhere along the way, we got so mired in the intricate details of the design that we didn't realize the size of the stone had become much larger than my parents' stone. We admit not paying attention to the measurements on the drawings, just the actual drawing details. We paid over $14K (embarrassing to look back on that now) & when it was finally placed at the cemetery, we were literally aghast at how big it was in comparison to the other stones. At the cemetery, I asked *********** father if they would please round off the stone & remove 4" from the top? They said they could not do that, only cut it off straight across. Who has ever heard of a monument company not being able to cut a curve on a stone? Cemeteries are full of stones with rounded cuts! Their other offer was to have us pay $4264 MORE for new, plainer, stone!!The sadder part was, they made sure we couldn't use other local monument companies to have the stone rounded off on top. Every company we contacted said they weren't able to do work on another company's stone, and because of their working relationship with Midwest, didn't want to get in the middle. At this point, we were so disgusted by the "options" they gave us, we no longer wanted to do business with them. If we were to get another cheaper stone made, we sure as h3ll were not going to give them any more of our $ to do so.
