I work in I.T. security and, from various indicators, I'm fairly certain this is a phishing & identity-theft front. I suspect they are using information gleaned from previous data breaches to trick people into divulging supplementary information that will allow them to execute various fraudulent activities. They ask for three key pieces of information on their "Payment Portal": 1). the Account Number they provided in their original communication allows them to connect you with the data they already have, 2). the Date of Birth is nothing any legitimate collection agency needs to collect a debt, and 3). your Social Security Number is the ultimate key to your kingdom. With these pieces of information, they can pose as you to file for your tex refund, open a new credit card account, obtain a loan, put a lien on your house, steal Social Security benefits, and generally make your life miserable for years to come. The best solution is simply not to respond. If you have a legitimate debt that needs paying, take it up with the creditor. Legit debt collection agencies do not own your debt, they're simply servicing it for their client (the creditor), so you can always, ALWAYS bypass the collection agency and pay the creditor.

****, thank you for your feedback. I can assure you are not trying to steal anyone's identity. we are a perfectly legitimate nationally licensed third party collection agency. On our payment portal, we ask for the account number that we assign to your account upon placement with our firm. Additionally, and in accordance with federal law we ask for your date of birth and the LAST 4 DIGITS of your social security number. We do this for t exact opposite reason you allege, which is to verify the identity of the person who is about to access your account information.

Received an aggressive call and several voicemails from this company in regard to a debt they say I owe. I asked for written confirmation, and received a letter saying I owe over $3700 to a company I've never heard of. According the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, I have a right to see documentation to verify this debt- that is, a copy of a contract I signed with the original company name and mailing address, the date it was incurred, and all names the company operated under when and since the debt was incurred. That's not what they sent, it's just something typed on their letterhead. I'd also like to know if this company has a license as a debt collection agency in my state. IF DEBT VERIFICATION CANNOT BE PROVIDED they need to cease and desist any future contact with me.
