Nielsen Tree Farms has been happy to be growing top-quality trees at a great price since 2001. We continue to grow many varieties of evergreens on the original farm near Winslow, Nebraska. Over the years, we have added the farm in Dodge, and currently have 3 farms in Lyons. In all, we have over 50 acres for production, allowing us to expand inventory and try new varieties. We are continuing to bring innovation and new ideas into the industry, and we are excited to share them with you.
We are continuing our use of Redi-RootTM growing containers for all of our deciduous liners. From one quart to 3 gallon liners, we have seen far superior growth to other air root pruning systems, and excellent root development. These field ready liners are taking off and growing at an amazing rate. By producing our own liners for our fields, we are controlling our quality better and are able to keep costs down. This allows our wholesale customers to be more competitive in the landscape market. We are also offering these liners for sale on a limited scale as we gradually increase our production in the greenhouse.
Our purchase of Itasca Greenhouse located at Cohasset, Minnesota in 2016 has allowed us to integrate our operation from seed, cutting, and tissue culture to finished trees. The latest news from the greenhouse is more availability of larger liners that are ready to go straight to the field. We have also moved much of the production to Christmas Tree liners. These trees are being shipped all over the United States for that industry. We are also working on new species of firs for the Midwest. Canaan fir have already shown their hardiness, and trials of Nordmann fir are underway. We hope to have some new options for our Midwest Christmas Tree farmers in the near future. We strive to continuously look for ways to improve what we are doing, and to stay on top of what the industry demands.
The GreenWorld Project is continuing to provide live trees for promotional purposes. It is a subsidiary of the Greenhouse that we hope will continue to provide a unique service for years to come.
