In summer 2024, my personal vehicle (2016 Honda Pilot) started experiencing what I suspected might be a transmission issue (intermittent whistling noise when vehicle is moving). Initially, I brought the vehicle to a ***** dealership who thought the noise was coming from the transmission. They changed the transmission fluid, but the noise remained the same. I decided to bring the vehicle to AAMCO Transmissions in **********, ** for an evaluation because they are transmission specialists. My wife went for a test drive with one of their mechanics and he also heard the whistling noise. They spent a few days evaluating it and concluded that the noise I was hearing was indeed coming from inside the transmission. After discussing their recommendations, I decided to have them replace the transmission with a rebuilt transmission. When I picked up the vehicle, the noise I was hearing was still there. I have recordings of the original whistling noise prior to service and after AAMCO replaced the transmission. It is clear from these recordings that it is the same noise. AAMCO then suggested a simple experiment to better isolate the source of the noise; they temporarily removed the rear drive shaft, essentially making the vehicle front wheel drive. The noise immediately went away. When AAMCO re-installed the rear drive shaft, the noise immediately returned. Further diagnostics performed by the ***** dealership has confirmed the rear drive shaft is indeed the source of the ******** summary, I paid AAMCO to replace a transmission which, evidence indicates, didn't need to be replaced. AAMCO was tasked with determining if the transmission was the source of the whistling noise. Simply removing the rear drive shaft (a 15 minute task) would have proven the transmission was not the source of the noise. I'm left with a vehicle that has the same issue. I recommend not doing business with this AAMCO franchise.
