- Additional Info:It has come to the attention of the Bureau that consumers have received mailings concerning mystery shopping and/or lottery winnings, which may include a check with the name of Murphy Machine Products, or similar.
Please be aware that Murphy Machine Products is not involved in this scheme, but has in fact had their identity stolen by the perpetrators.
Consumers should be advised that offers such as this are known as check scams. Any offer which requests that:
1) the consumer deposit a check into their bank account
2) send some or all of that money onward, usually via wire transfer
...is a check scam. In the check scam, the scammer takes advantage of certain banking practices in order to defraud consumers out of their own money, under the guise of funds from a "cleared" check.
