It's important to remember that the demand for child care is at an all time high. Because of this increased demand, make sure that you start looking for child care early. To begin your search, get the names of child care facilities from friends, neighbors, and co-workers and check them out with the BBB. Once you have narrowed the search, contact your choices and ask for a brochure about the services they offer, as well as applications. The next step is to visit the agencies. It's always best to call and make an appointment so that time can be allotted to talk with you, and show you around the facility. During your visit, talk with the director and teachers and learn about the facilities by asking questions and observing what is going on. If you are satisfied with the answers to your questions and observations, ask the facilities for the names of other parents that would be willing to talk with you about them. Call those parents and get their opinion. After you have decided on a child care facility, arrange for your child to visit for a couple of hours before it is time for them to spend the entire day there. In the meantime, talk about the facility to your child in a very positive manner. For older children, ask about an orientation session, and make sure that you and your child attends. The more familiar you are with the facility, the easier the transition will be.
