I hired **** ********* Services to inspect/service/clean 2 gas fireplaces in our new old house. Upon cleaning one, I was informed, *********** The tech broke the pilot assembly during cleaning and I was informed that a replacement would cost $220 to install on top of their service fee. I was aware that the pilot assembly cost about $60 retail. The owner came over a couple days later to install a new pilot assembly. After the work was completed, the fireplace wouldn't shut off. A different **** tech came back over and informed me, ********** The gas valve needs to be replaced". I spoke with the owner since the price was starting to spiral and some costs were due to the fact that they broke the pilot assembly. He said he'd sell me a new valve "at cost". That cost was $440.Research showed that a valve failure was extremely rare. It turned out the cost of a self-install was $165. I took pictures of the valve wiring that was done by the company and bought and installed a new valve myself. After the work was done, the fireplace still wouldn't shut off so I called "The *****************" to help me figure out what was going on.After a 5 minute diagnosis The **** owner had wired the new pilot assembly upside down and backwards. The solution was so simple he didn't charge me for the visit. It's not an unreasonable expectation for the owner and techs of a fireplace repair company to know how to correctly wire up a pilot assembly and properly diagnosing a fireplace that won't shut off. Clearly one of two things were going on here. 1. The owner and his staff weren't competent and simply miswired the pilot incorrectly and mis-diagnosed the failure to shutoff issue. 2. The owner purposefully miswired the connections to the valve so that he could come back later, sell me a $440 valve, install it and wire it correctly to "fix" a non-existent problem.Whether due to incompetence or an attempt at outright fraud, consider this before hiring this company.
