- Additional Info:Consumers are sent a counterfeit cashier's check and are advised that in order to receive the full amount of their "winnings", the consumers must pay state and federal taxes. Before the bank has determined that the check is bogus, the victim has already wired money. The victim loses out on both ends of the deal.
The BBB urges consumers to be cautious when dealing with foreign lottery solicitations. Consumers should ignore all mail with checks, e-mail and phone solicitations for foreign lottery promotions. And, never give out your credit card or bank account information or any other personal information.
As a general proposition, sending lottery material through the mail is prohibited by federal law. This material includes letters or circulars concerning a lottery, tickets or any claiming to represent tickets in a lottery, and payments to purchase such tickets.
Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
