On January 27, 2020, Better Business Bureau received a complaint from a consumer regarding advertising concerns. The consumer alleges Regal Events emailed them inquiring about renting the consumer’s timeshare in Mexico, explaining they had a buyer seeking to rent the timeshare for five to ten weeks for a special event. Regal Events then sent the consumer a contract, advising the consumer they would be responsible for maintenance fees, and all fees concerning the rental process. The consumer was then instructed to forward the fees to a mutual holding company where the money would be held in escrow to cover Mexican Government fees, closing costs, and attorney fees. The Consumer was told once all the arrangements were finalized in Mexico, the renter would transfer funds to the mutual holding company which in turn would issue a check to the consumer. Regal Events and the mutual holding company failed to provide any currency to the consumer who suffered a significant financial loss.

BBB found that the website domain is registered in a foreign country, and a review of the company website revealed that the company claims to be located at 198 Wall Street in Seattle, Washington 98121. A Google search revealed this address to be an apartment building with no identifiable office markings, and the telephone number for the company has been linked to other scams. A business license for Regal Events could not be located with the Washington State Department of Revenue.

The Better Business Bureau encourages consumers who are victims of this scam to file complaints with the Federal Trade Commission, at www.ftc.gov. Consumers are also encouraged to refrain from forwarding U.S. Currency to a business until the business has been vetted.
