Ad Review
White Hills Knives is advertising that the company is an "American Owned & Operated Business" and displaying the American flag on their website, whitehillsknives.com.
According to the BBB Code of Advertising, "“Made in USA” and similar terms used to describe the origin of a product must be truthful and substantiated." Additionally, "An advertisement as a whole may be misleading by implication, although every sentence separately considered may be literally true. Misrepresentation may result not only from direct statements, but by omitting or obscuring a material fact."
BBB wrote to the company on July 26, 2023 requesting that they substantiate that their products are made in the USA or that they modify or discontinue the advertisement. White Hills Knives replied the same day, stating: "I received your email which confused me. Our products are not made in the USA & we don't claim this thing on our website. Each of our products is Handmade & forged, 100% unique items & true natural handles are used. Our suppliers make products on order in Wazirabad, Pakistan."
On August 7th we replied by explaining that, "Our research indicates that most online reviews consider blades made in Pakistan to be "mass produced" and of inferior quality to those made in other countries. Despite the fact that you are not using the exact phrase "Made in the USA," the wording and layout of your website appear to strongly suggest that the blades are made in the USA. You state that the company is located in the US, but do not indicate that the products you sell are imported." We requested that they add a statement explaining the origin of the products to their website. On August 10th the company wrote us back explaining that they had added the information to their website. BBB reviewed their website and found that they had added a long statement under the tab "About our Knives" on their product pages. Buried within this statement the company writes, "Our knives are crafted in Pakistan's renowned city of Wazirabad"
The BBB Code of Advertising explains that an advertisement may also be misleading if a material fact is withheld or obscured. On August 15, 2023 we requested that the company state the knives' origin plainly and clearly up front or discontinue their use of the American flag and other references to the company being located in the USA. As of today's date the company has not responded.
